The DFS 230 A carried one pilot and up to eight fully armed soldiers. It was first used against targets in Belgium in May 1940. It was towed several times by the aircraft types He 111, Hs 126, Ju 52/3m, Ju 87 and Bf 110 and had a maximum flight weight of 2045 kg including a mobile load of 1270 kg. A detachable wheel undercarriage was attached for take-off, the landing was carried out with the help of sliding shoes on the front of the fuselage. The DFS-230 had the highest glide ratio (18) of any World War 2 military glider. The DFS 230 B and C were identical on the outside, the latter machine had small forward-facing brake missiles attached below the machine.
As a “disposable product”, 1,600 units were built, which often remained in their first use at the destination and were blown up against unauthorized use. Nine soldiers or paratroopers sat astride each other on a bench in the cargo space, which was little more than shoulder-wide. Optionally, material for the replenishment was transported or injured people were transported. Before that, the pilot was sitting in the aircraft driver’s cabin, which was open to the rear.
It was not planned to drop parachutists.

My uncle did fly this gliders as a pilot trainee of the Luftwaffe. He was fascinated by flying gliders since his childhood and the Luftwaffe branch of the Hitler Youth offered to him a career as a pilot. During the war he was still on training so not yet fully licensed to fly combat missions. When the red army pushed forward into Poland the whole pilot training unit had to retreat to Germany so the gliders were loaded with people and equipment. His plane was overloaded and not well balanced. They were pulled by an He111 plane. During the start process Shortly after leaving the ground the glider started to roll from side to side and turned upside down. The towing plane cut the line and was able to continue its flight but the glider crashed. All people inside the glider including the pilot died with the exception of My uncle- he was the only survivor. Due to his injuries after the crash he got a job in the administration but was drawn to the Volkssturm infantry at the end of the war. When he arrived at the front near Emden he reported to his captain that he was there and, turning around, he was shot in the head by a Canadian sniper, severing his optical nerve but leaving him alive. He was blind then. This happened a few weeks before the war ended. After the war he first became a medical masseur in a hospital and later worked as a clerk in an iron ore trading company. He died in December 2022 shortly before his 99th birthday.
Hey I'm a young builder, and i start the conception of plan of this aircraft, and a question stay without answer : What's the type of rib for the wing ? Can you ask me ?
In any case you made a work art !!
L.R.
looking different dear
next step, put a real pulsejet engines, i think will be amazing!!
I wish I could build something as cool. This is spectacular
The detail in these flugzeuge is always amazing.
Nice video, almost looks like a U-2 in the air!
Hello, congratulations on a great machine and a successful flight.
I'm currently building the DSF-230 scale 1:5,5 I'm curious, if it's not a secret, what wing profile did you use? One more question – is your glider towed after the tug model?
best regards
Tomasz
Thanks for the detailed data.
I would appreciate it if you let me know the center of gravity in mac %, main wing & horizontal wing incidence anlges.
I want to make it the same shape.
I also saw great videos.
Excellent build that thing sure flies nice, what kind of payload Can You Haul
I hate it when people force me to listen to music that I don't like
Watching scale sailplanes is so nice because their pilots actually use the rudder
That is a brilliant it took me a while to understand how you had fitted the motors and fans. Looks fantastic in the air….the sound on landing sounds like it does in a ww2 movie.
Great camera shots from just behind the cockpit, how about shot from just behind cockpit on side or even from inside, pilots eye view. Great model and detail.
Amazing!
Super geiles glider, radio needs to be silenced
Absolute stunner! The attention to detail is utterly amazing. Those landings, I was definitely on the edge of my seat as well!! As soon as you deployed those flaps it looked like the plane hit the brakes, holy moly! Excellent flying!
Muy bonito aeromodelo buenos detalles y se ve genial volando! Felicitaciones
Fascinating model and terrific result, brilliant!
Awesome, a 10kg Modell powered with 2 70mm EDF Units is really brave??
Как реалистично!
Brilliant video
Nazi regime aside, the airmen and troops who flew in these things must have been brave beyond understanding – some would say stupid but to pilot an assault glider was an advanced skill, I often think the glider riders on both sides deserve far more credit than they get…just imagine piloting a max loaded craft of cloth and tubing with no armor, full of battle-ready, fully geared troops into heavily defended enemy territory, often at night with the most basic navigation equipment, extreme high wing loading and with only one shot at the approach and landing into unprepared fields they’re never been to and knew little about, with no aids other than basic beacons , in those conditions they were essentially heavy darts, it boggles the mind.
I don't care that it has EDF instead of pulse jet engines. It looks stunning. And when the engines are switched off it is an assault glider..
Beautiful job!!! It's so nice to see a appropriately powered scale model. It's very scale, and so nice to see, other than a model that's grossly overpowered. Thank you Sir for such a beautiful model, and fine craftsmanship.
Super Modell, mein Vater hat im Krieg DFS-230 geflogen, ich baue im Maßstab 1:6,wo könnte man den Plan für den Lastensegler beziehen.
wow, what a Plane
Modellflugplatz Setzingen/Altheim??
Very nice ???????????????
Realistic scale …..beautiful piloten…..figure….
Hello everyone and thanks a lot for your kind comments! I´m Jo Nuesseler and In addition to the video-description, I´d like to explain, that in WWII there was a programm running in the DFS organization under Leadership of Hans Jakobs (a real german glider pioneer). They used pulse-jet engine, similar and from same supplier then for the buzz bomb (V1) to drive this glider. The aim was to safe towing planes. At an altitude of arround 4000m they wantet to stopp the engines and glide noiseless to the destination. For me it was a technical challenge and I´m happy with the setup but not with the sound! I´m also a pulse-jet pilot (with my He 162 Salamander) and I love these engines. So I will investigate in a solution to drown out the EDFs´with a sound generator….
