hi everyone and welcome to the electron retrax youtube channel i’m martin pickering and today we’re looking at some of the incredible precision engineering that goes into every electron product to guarantee the most reliable system possible let’s go [Music] electron retrax as a brand is known for extreme reliability but how is that achieved and what is it that makes electrons stand out we’ve mentioned in previous videos how all of electrons retracts are milled out of a single aviation grade 7075 t6 aluminium block so this cage that houses all the retrax components started its life as a single billet that’s been precisely milled down to the tightest of tolerances all of this is in stark contrast with most other retracts on the market which are assembled from a flat pack of side panels and a set of screws sounds like something you can get from ikea right the rigidity and precision that can be achieved using each of these two methods are truly worlds apart obviously the cost of production is also vastly different the first point actually rolls into point number two and eventually into point number three and this is the fact that the precision with which the cage can be produced then dictates the precision with which the rest of the parts can be produced and then assembled into the final system thanks to the incredible tolerances achieved during the machining process all other components can be equally precise all of which generates a much more solid much stronger finished unit this precision means slop can be eliminated down to a micron level all of which dramatically reduces both the wear and the stress on all the load-bearing parts inside the retract following this philosophy electron retracts have been able to solve all of the complex problems prior to production rather than having to design in systems to cover up its shortcomings our third point is also our clearest example of this chain that is only as precise as your loosest link electron retrax is about the only manufacturer that installs its motor in a fixed permanent location despite this being mechanically the best option thanks to some great engineering and the precision with which the entire system is produced all components can move freely and linearly while being controlled from a fixed and therefore more reliable and robust position why is that not industry standard then the answer to that is simple because the amount of precision that’s required throughout the unit is astronomical compared to going the easy route of just letting everything hang loose this is why most other systems on the market have the motor entirely loosely held in just one pivoting position needing to rock in and out with the retract to achieve its movement all those extra movements are just reducing the available torque to the motor and therefore the retract and is another possible source of the system jamming if for any reason the system is not able to rock in and out we could go into great detail of how the permanently fixed motor system used by electron retract also allows the use of bearings on both sides of the spindle as opposed to just on the motor’s side or how much more efficient the torque can be transmitted to the slider and well i think you’ve got the idea keeping on with the spindle though electron retract spindle is truly a thing of beauty rather than using a standard off-the-shelf threaded rod electron produces their own custom-made square thread spindle which makes a big difference and a lot of sense here’s why which way do you want the slider to go relative to the spindle forwards or backwards right well a square thread on the spindle will exert all of its force in either a forwards or backwards motion a standard threaded rod on the other hand has let’s say roughly a 60 degree angle so the 30 degrees left is torque that’s being lost as it’s trying to push the slider outwards in real world terms this results in electron retract square thread spindle being able to produce more torque and at a greater speed and while we’re on the subject of spindle and slider electron actually protects their sliders at both ends of its journey that’s right once again it’s down to all that precision milling which allows the exact shape of the slider to be designed into the cage the result a much lower stress on the slider upon landing impacts thanks to it having a much larger surface area that it’s in contact with in order to spread the load but that’s enough praise for extreme machining and tight tolerances after all it’s one thing to produce this stuff once you know what works but how do you know what works in the first place electron retracts has the advantage of being owned and run by error modelers but not just error modelers error modelers with degrees in engineering and the will to make this wonderful hobby even better this mentality results in a never-ending search and development team working around the clock to find new and intriguing ways to either design redesign or improve any product that they’re working on including their own despite this genius team the real world can always throw you a curveball so all new developments are tested in-house at the flying field extensively before a product or upgrade ever gets released to the public even with all of these safeguards there are always queries questions and I'm having trouble getting RPM one to work on SparkSwitchProen. I have Futaba 18 MZ radio and do what you say in the video for the setup of the SSpro that you have made. Since I have a DA120cc, I have to use PBS-RPM from Powerbox …. What do I have to do for it to work? …. Regard Jan Steinar
