this massive box has my J10 in it and we’ve shipped it all the way to Western Park it’s been a while since we shipped a model anywhere so I thought it was time to revisit the dos and don’ts and hopefully she’s arrived in one piece so first thing first the actual box itself but aside from it being particularly expensive to ship it’s worth pointing out that you need to be very careful of what you make the box out of when shipping it internationally depending on the destination you may be required if it’s made out of wood for it to be specially treated wood to make sure that there are no bugs inside of it if you use standard wood and it goes to one of those countries as I found out when I shipped a model to Chile it can actually be turned back if it doesn’t have that sealed wood in this case going from Spain to England there aren’t really any restrictions all we had to do was make sure we use plywood which is considered to be treated as much as the glue the heat and the pressure kills anything if there were any bugs inside of it something else to bear in mind is that these boxes not only are they big they’re relatively heavy as well and we know that transport agencies don’t always take the best care of our boxes so to make it easy for them chances are they’re going to lift it up on a forklift so we need to make sure that we can actually lift the box off the ground even though we are going to pay for this extra size as if the box was this big but they can get the forklift underneath it easily and you’re not risking them putting the forklift through the box itself hopefully now obviously I don’t have a forklift and chances are the driver doesn’t have one when picking up or dropping off either so we also need to have an easy method to pick it up and move it about manually so something just to be able to lift it like that now fragile stickers are obviously a must we never know if they’re going to uh take any notice but we can but try we’ve got fragile we’ve also got no step now to keep this light and to be able to pick it up by hand this is actually made out of light ply 5 mm so it is quite thin which means it’s also not too strong so very much fragile no step we’ve got some other stickers on here so we got fragile do not stand on and keep dry after all the wood isn’t treated we also have a description of what’s in the box so toy model airplane very fragile please handle with care it’s going to be a temporary import into the UK which should avoid import tax and should make it easier for exporting back to Spain once we’ve finished and then we also have a picture of the contents now this isn’t really obligatory but it can be helpful because if they want to know what’s in the box yes they can x-ray it but they want to see inside if they’re that way inclined well they can look at the picture and hopefully they’re not going to unscrew the box with the risk of screwing it back on incorrectly or actually damaging anything inside so they can see what’s in the box without having to open it now time for us to open it and hopefully everything’s arrived in one piece so rule number one as well as our good friend Andreas has just pointed out is always bring a fully charged drill you don’t want to unscrew the whole box by hand anyway moment of truth has everything arrived safe and in the same location where it was when it left Spain hope so it’s looking good and in here we have our J10 now then what have we done we have a cradle for the fuselage where it sits in and through the wing tube we’ve got two straps holding it down to the base of the crate so we’ll have to unscrew that to get the fuselage out it’s only screwed down through the wing tube the idea for that is that A it needs to be tight and not move but B if the box does flex at all we don’t want the box flexing and the plane having two fixture points because then the plane is going to want to flex with the box as well so if we have just one point if the plane needs to move a little bit it can while still being secure then we’ve got our wings and rudders rudders stacked strapped to the sides relatively tight but also relatively loose just enough so they can’t go anywhere but if they do need to vibrate a little bit then that’s not an issue we’ve got the same over here and then round on this side we have our wing tube also secured in by a single point we actually 3D printed some supports here with the same outside diameter as the uh wing tube itself with my Eligu 3D printer which is fantastic that means that that cannot move anywhere just held in with one cable tie it can’t go forwards or backwards because of these two lumps of wood and then in there we’ve actually got a few screwdrivers wrapped in bubble wrap which are the ones that we need to assemble the plane with and then we also have stuck onto the side of the box my address so if this box did get lost for any reason once they open it up they’re going to see where they can ship it back and then on the plane itself we have just a piece of paper again saying the same thing as we had outside in big fluorescent yellow saying very fragile model airplane please please handle with care but it looks like everything’s worked we now have our J10 here in the UK got to take off these top stringers so we can get the plane out get assembled start having some fun here in the UK and that’s the plane out the box now something that’s important to know when shipping models like this is that a there can be no batteries inside so you must take the lipos or batteries out carry them with you in hand luggage it can’t be uh sent in your main suitcase it has to be in hand luggage and then just reinstall them once we get to the flying field fuel is similar if it’s got a fuel tank it also has to be either removed or completely bone dry that applies both to the fuel tank and also the UAT any fuel in there can again cause problems when it gets X-rayed because it’s effectively explosive so with those two things in mind everything else that we said about the box you should be safe to ship your models anywhere you want now all we’ve got left to do is put it together and start having some fun good to go let’s get in the air and have some fun heat [Applause] [Music] heat [Applause] heat heat heat heat make sure to subscribe in order to watch future videos including the full Western Park see you there

  1. What is the normal procedure for getting fuel when visiting a show in a different country?
Do the organisers normally have fuel available for you to buy?

  2. How do you maintain roll control when hovering?
The box was super interesting! We use 8mm or 10mm Correx to ship our F5J gliders, usually as excess baggage when flying to comps.

  3. I would be so worried about shipping a plane, but then again I guess when you purchase a plane, it gets shipped to you. 🤔. Shame I missed you again this year. 🫡
